Associated American Artists

The Associated American Artists Galleries Records comprises articles, clippings, exhibition catalogs, photographs and promotional material pertaining to the general history of the organization, the individual artists it represented, and promotions for various clients. Originally housed in 27 scrapbooks, the documents have been removed and placed in folders for archival preservation.

Lossing, Benson John, 1813-1891.

The Benson John Lossing Collection is an assortment of correspondence, drawings, writings, and memorabilia relating to the 19th century historian, illustrator, and editor of The American Historical Review (1813-1891). Predominantly correspondence, the collection centers around Lossing's information gathering for his popularizations of American history, while it also illuminates the early publishing industry in the United States.

Stoddard, Charles Warren, 1843-1909.

Collection of correspondence addressed to the American author, novelist, poet. Incoming letters from archbishop of St. Louis Peter Richard Kenrick, landscape and figure painter John La Farge, and American artist F.D. Millet. The bulk of the letters (1875-1900) is from Millet, many originating from the various American and European cities in which he worked as a painter and interior designer. A friend of Henry Adams, Henry James, Mark Twain, and a number of minor figures, Millet, in a series of 36 multi-paged letters which are of a highly personal nature, illuminates the contemporary American artistic and literary scene. The letters also contain many references to both Stoddard’s and Millet’s work.

Grand Central Moderns.

The Grand Central Moderns, under the direction of Colette Roberts, was a "non-profit organization dealing in Modern American Art," a branch of the "long-established institution known as Grand Central Art Galleries." Original material pertaining to group and solo exhibitions held at Grand Central Moderns as well as an assortment of personal papers of Colette Roberts. Gallery material consists of clippings, correspondence, exhibition catalogs, photographs, and press releases relating to seventy-nine artists represented by the Gallery as well as several group exhibitions. The Colette Roberts material contains correspondence, photographs, miscellaneous printed material, writings, and memorabilia.
